The verdant setting of Plantation Lodge feels like a green oasis atop red-brown hills, surrounded by the immensity and peace of the Tanzanian highlands. A stay here is an immersion in a restful, gracious world, yet Plantation Lodge is conveniently located near the Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire and Lake Manyara national parks. As it name suggests, the lodge lies at the center of a working coffee plantation and is surrounded by flowering gardens.

Wildlife Viewing & Activities

Ngorongoro Crater is rightly regarded one of the premier wonders of the natural world. Here within the world's largest unbroken volcanic caldera is one of the densest concentrations of game in all of Africa. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area boundary is just 20 minutes' drive from Plantation Lodge. When the morning mists part to unveil the crater floor, safari-goers discover a "Noah's Ark" of wildlife: 25,000 large animals live here including zebra, buffalo, antelope, lion, black rhino, hippo and elephant. The pink flamingos of Lake Manyara and Tarangire's famous elephants are also close-by safari highlights. Back at the lodge, enjoy excellent bird watching in the gardens, with Fischer’s lovebirds and yellow-bellied sunbirds visiting regularly. Optional activities include a tour of a coffee plantation to learn how coffee is grown and roasted, and a visit to a local farm.

The below chart helps to illustrate major wildlife sightings often experienced in the Ngorongoro Crater. Seasonally, flamingos may be seen on the lake, and there is always a high concentration of antelopes and predators. Other typical sightings may include gazelles, warthog, ostrich and a number of other mammals, birds and reptiles. Exact sightings will depend on seasonality and wildlife movements.

Review Plantation Lodge
Month of travel: July
"My son and I spent 2 nights at Plantation Lodge in July, 2011. It was our base for visiting Ngorongo Crater. It was one of those “must stay at” places booked by my travel agent. The Lodge is at the end of a long dusty, bumpy, dirt road. You begin wonder where in the word you are headed. All of a sudden, you drive up to the gates, the attendants open it, and you find yourself in a beautiful oasis. The grounds are very well maintained and lush with tropical plants. It seems every garden is a little different. I don’t know if it was coincidence, but the owner (Renata) came out to meet us as we were walking to the front door. Nice touch. There is plenty of staff and they are very polite and helpful. Everyone was low key and discrete but made you feel welcome. The room (Forest East) was very clean and had a patio overlooking the grounds. The food was very good, tasty, and well presented. They can compete with any fine restaurant in the US. They serve afternoon tea/coffee with biscuits and snacks until 5:00 PM. The lodge caters to families and couples. I don’t know how many people they can sleep but the grounds and restaurant were never crowded. They obviously do not cater to larger tour groups. They have Wi-Fi and also a desktop computer available to guests. We did not make full use of the beautiful grounds. We were on the go with safari drives. It would have been nice to have spent a few hours at the main patio just to relax. The Crater was terrific with great wildlife diversity, and is probably no more than 15-20 minutes away. This location, the beautiful grounds, and the warm welcome, make Plantation Lodge a great place to stay. "

"This was my least favorite lodging on the safari. It was luxurious but seemed like a place that you could find anyplace in any country. We only spent one night there and we were used to being in luxury tents so I was probably jaded by the great tent camps available where we were closer to the animals and nature."

"The first thing we did when we got our bags unpacked was go for a swim in the pool! I loved the wide open grounds at the Plantation Lodge. We sat under a tree and read books before joining our group in the dining room for dinner. What a treat! The food was superb, full of fresh vegetables from the local gardens. Avocado trees were everywhere. The front desk was very helpful when I couldn't find my glasses, they sent some staff out to search the grounds and eventually came back with them from poolside. They felt like friends when we left."
