Set on a private 6,000-acre conservancy five minutes from Amboseli National Park, Tawi features a tranquil setting with easy access to some of Kenya's best elephant and wildlife viewing. Tawi's 12 cottages sit in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro, the world's tallest free-standing mountain, which can be seen on a clear day. The mountain's snow-melt forms the marshes in Amboseli that huge herds of elephant frequent daily.

The Camp

Each of Tawi Lodge's 13 thatched cottages boasts a private wooden veranda facing toward Mount Kilimanjaro. En suite bathrooms feature both a shower and bathtub, and the rooms also have their own fireplaces and mini bars for your comfort. All lighting and water systems are powered by solar energy. A heated swimming pool and spa treatments are available for guests as well, and dining is enjoyed in the central area either communally or at a private table. The wine cellar adds an element not often experienced on safari, and while Tawi enjoys many uniquely modern features, the camp maintains a very traditional style and homelike atmosphere. A camp fire and bush bar are ideal gathering points for gregarious guests to share their daily adventures.

Wildlife Viewing & Activities

The elephants are no doubt the kings of the park and they are available in big numbers. These elephants can be seen and photographed easily because of the flat terrain. The elephants in Amboseli, which are also considered to be among the biggest in the country, mainly enjoy the swamps, in which they get cool waters that they share with hippos hiding beneath the papyrus. A large resident population of wildbeest together with Burchell’s zebra, also have a home in the park. Thomson’s and Grant’s gazelles, bufallo, warthog, black rhino, Maasai giraffe, impala, waterbuck and dik-dik are among the grass eaters. Baboons and vervet monkeys live in the scarce woodlands. Lions, spotted hyenas, wild cats, jackals and caracals represent the carnivores. Cheetah and leopards are not so common. More than 400 species of birds can be found. Twice daily wildlife drives within Amboseli as well as night drives in the Tawi Conservancy can be enjoyed.

Amboseli National Park is known for its herds of free-ranging elephants that journey to drink from the marshes at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro. Chyulu Hills also has resident elephants and other big mammals. The chart below shows common sightings in these areas. Other typical sightings may include a number of small mammals, birds and reptiles. Exact sightings will depend on seasonality and wildlife movements.
