Mara Expedition Camp is built on a small bend in the Ntiakitiak River, where a thick riverine forest meets the unbridled savanna in the Maasai Mara National Reserve. It enjoys prime access to both the reserve and the Mara North Conservancy, the perfect location for this intimate, tented camp, which was built with a light footprint in mind. The mobility and non-permanence of Mara Expedition Camp speaks to its reverence for its surrounding environment.

Our Expert Says

Mara Expedition Camp is the little sister to Mara Plains Camp. It could be called "luxurious" for a mobile-style camp and is nicely located away from the more crowded areas of the Maasai Mara, wedged up against a private conservancy where walks can also be done. And for photographers or those who wish to learn, there are a couple of Canon digital SLR's for your use on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Camp

Location: Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya
Number of Tents: 5

Mara Expedition Camp reveals the ambience of yesteryear. It's mobility make it much like an authentic expedition camp, yet the five tents are nothing short of elegant. Each tent is shaded by the forest, featuring en suite bathrooms with cold running water in the twin basins, flushing toilets and brass safari bucket showers with on-demand hot water provided. Under the heavy canvas, the tents hold rich leather and hardwood furniture, heavy campaign chests, brass chandeliers, rich textiles and high quality linens. While the camp is unfenced, it is not unusual to spot zebra or wildebeest passing right through camp. Common areas are simple and comfortable with a lounge tent draped in canvas, the obligatory firepit, where stories are told at dusk, and a dining tent for all guests to gather and share sumptuous dinners fit for a five-star restaurant. Enjoy al fresco breakfasts and lunches either in the bush or under the canopy in camp.

Wildlife Viewing & Activities

Mara Expedition Camp is known for its leopard residents that wander the riverbanks, and it takes advantage of two migrations — the famous annual wildebeest migration of nearly two million animals and the lesser-known Loita migration, comprising another 50,000 wildebeest and over 100,000 zebra. From Mara Expedition Camp, embark on full-day wildlife drives with picnic lunches, maximizing your time with the herds, predators and large mammals for which this area is most known. Enjoy access to both the Maasai Mara National Reserve as well as the more exclusive Mara North Conservancy, where you may enjoy getting out of the vehicles for guided walks. In a completely open-sided Land Cruiser, enjoy a rare 300-degree view on your drives for great photography opportunities and spotting the lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, rhino and plains animals of the Maasai Mara. At additional cost, hot air ballooning can be enjoyed at daybreak. Mara Expedition Camp also participates in local school and community projects that provide unique insights into Kenya's local people.

The Maasai Mara is home to an abundance of resident wildlife year-round. The great migration of nearly two million wildebeest and zebra is at its peak between late July and early October, while the local Loita wildebeest migration typically arrives in June. Other typical sightings may include a number of antelopes, endemic birds and reptiles. Exact sightings will depend on rain patterns and wildlife movements.
