Mara Bushtops truly evokes a sense of luxury, only to be complemented by the surrounding natural beauty. The camp of 12 stretched-canvas suites is set along the sloping hillside of a private conservancy bordering the famed Maasai Mara National Reserve, where the Big Five roam year-round. Watch giraffe tower below your deck, drawn to the salt lick, take guided walks nearby, or soak in your own private hot tub with a view.

Our Expert Says

Mara Bushtops is undoubtedly a beautiful camp! The elevated perspective of the camp makes for beautiful views, and the tents, while plush, can be opened on three sides to take in the views of giraffe grazing down below and the fresh air, truly a natural experience.

The Camp

Location: Private Conservancy, Maasai Mara, Kenya
Number of Tents: 12

Mara Bushtops provides 12 spacious tents, each built on a wooden deck with pale, stretched canvas providing a warm, diffused light. Each tent has an en suite bathroom with private indoor and outdoor showers and hot and cold running water, as well as a private, wrap-around deck with a discrete soaking tub overlooking the plains. Plush linens adorn the beds, while traditional African masks hover above the headboard. The tent opens fully on three sides with zip-up flaps, allowing 180-degree views of the sprawling Mara landscape, and it is fully closed in the evening or anytime you prefer. The Leopard Family Suite features two en suite bedrooms with a shared living area and expansive deck stretching the width of the suite. Try to spot distant wildlife with the beautiful telescope on your private deck. At the heart of camp is a reception area, open-air deck and sunken lounge, dining areas, a wine cellar, bar, library and curio shop. An infinity pool holds the best views, while the Amani Spa has a heated pool, sauna, Jacuzzi and fitness center. Enjoy a cocktail around the fire in the evening before a wine tasting in the cellar and dinner.

Wildlife Viewing & Activities

Mara Bushtops is situated on a private conservancy bordering the Maasai Mara National Reserve. This is ideal for exploring the area on foot and after dusk, which cannot be done within the national reserve. Wildlife drives showcase the Big Five, with leopard and black rhino being the more elusive species. Lion, buffalo, elephant and great numbers of impala, Maasai giraffe and Burchell's zebra can be spotted most of the year, with the added spectacle of the Great Migration of nearly two million wildebeest, as well as the smaller Loita Migration, passing through sometime between July and October. Morning or full-day wildlife drives can be enjoyed in the national reserve, venturing to the Mara River to watch for the chance wildebeest crossing or just enjoying the resident wildlife anytime of year, and late afternoon wildlife drives are ideally done in the private conservancy, where you can linger beyond twilight to observe nocturnal species, hunting lions and cheetah, and try stargazing in the unpolluted skies. Balloon safaris are optional, additional cost and should be booked in advance.

The Maasai Mara is home to an abundance of resident wildlife year-round. The great migration of nearly two million wildebeest and zebra is at its peak between late July and early October, while the local Loita wildebeest migration typically arrives in June. Other typical sightings may include a number of antelopes, endemic birds and reptiles. Exact sightings will depend on rain patterns and wildlife movements.
