Our Expert Says

The Crater is a remarkable place, but I am generally not a big lodge sort of guy and this area is known for those type of accommodations. Enter Lemala Camp Ngorongoro! This is truly a luxurious, intimate and authentic tented camp placing guests on the rim with wonderful seclusion and easy access to the Crater entrance.

The Camp

Location: Ngorongoro Crater
Number of Tents: 9

Important Note: Lemala is Distinctive in amenities but closer to Premier in price because it is unique as a tented camp in a prime location on the crater rim.

Lemala Ngorongoro is located in a private area on the north side of the Ngorongoro Crater, near the less-traveled Lemala access route. Open seasonally (except for April and May), its prime location allows for quick access to the crater floor, making full-day nature drives possible among some of the best wildlife viewing on earth. The camp offers secluded, cozy accommodations under canvas. Each spacious tent is outfitted with a gas heater, two queen or one king-sized bed with warm duvets, wooden flooring with rugs, 24-hour solar lighting, and an en-suite bathroom with dressing area, flush toilet and safari shower. The mess tent is beautifully furnished with grand sofas, lamps, chests, rugs, bookcases and wooden corner cabinets. In the evening, guests gather around the campfire for sundowners before convening for dinner hosted by the camp manager. House alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks are included at meal times.

Wildlife Viewing & Activities

Ngorongoro Crater is rightly considered one of the wonders of the natural world. Within the precipitous walls of the largest unbroken volcanic caldera on earth, we find one of the densest concentrations of game in all Africa. Though the crater is just 12 miles in diameter, it offers a wide diversity of habitats including acacia forest, swamp, woodland, short grass, long grass and riverine habitats. The region is famed for its lion, cheetah, old bull elephants, Cape buffalo, herds of wildebeest and amazing bird life, including flamingos. The crater also boasts the world’s highest density of hyena, which compete fiercely with the dominant lion population for food. With a little luck it’s possible to find black rhino – a rare treat in northern Tanzania. Lemala’s major advantage over other camps in the area is its location near the Lemala access route, allowing for rapid access into the crater. Cultural walks with local Masai are an optional activity.

The below chart helps to illustrate major wildlife sightings often experienced in the Ngorongoro Crater. Seasonally, flamingos may be seen on the lake, and there is always a high concentration of antelopes and predators. Other typical sightings may include gazelles, warthog, ostrich and a number of other mammals, birds and reptiles. Exact sightings will depend on seasonality and wildlife movements.

Conservation

Lemala Ngorongoro supports the Lerai Foundation, a non-profit organization founded on the idea that local communities should receive direct, long-term benefits from sustainable tourism, thus increasing support for area conservation. Lemala Ngorongoro employs local people and provides them with the education and skills training they need to succeed in the tourism and hospitality industry. Through the foundation Lemala Camp is working with the Masai community of Irkapusi, located on the border of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, to improve the facilities of its primary school, attended by nearly 600 students. The foundation is currently raising funds to build accommodations for all of the school’s teachers, supply the school with a much-needed well, and provide desks and chairs for all students. Long-term project goals include providing the school with a decent library, science laboratory and audio-visual projector, and to invest in ongoing teacher-training programs.

Review Lemala Ngorongoro
Month of travel: February
"Lemala Camp is nestled in a lush forest on the crater rim in unparelleled seclusion offering the opportunity to experience the diversity of Tanzanian landscapes. The canvas tent was very roomy and immaculate. The beds were super cozy and the ensuite bathroom was huge. From here we were the first to enter Ngorongoro Crater for our morning game drive. This was exactly what we wanted - to experience Africa without the maddening crowds."

"Great location. It is definitely luxury camping. I feel guilty telling people I stayed in a tent since it defies the definition of "tent" camping. Even a flush toilet and running water! A good place to spend a night after animal watching."

"This is a super little tented camp. You don't see into the crater from the camp, we were more in a forest, but we also the first ones into the crater and last ones to leave, so it has its benefits!"

Month of travel: February
"We only spent one night here, leaving very early the next morning, but wow – what a beautiful setting! This camp, nestled in the trees with great light and lush forest views, was a welcome retreat after a long day on safari, and a great jumping-off point for our return to Arusha. The staff was friendly and accommodating. Set up on wooden plank floors, the tents are clean, comfortable and expansive, with full, comfy beds and – get this – leather couches! Plus, the en suite bathrooms are enormous! The bucket showers were easy to manage, and the ‘real sink’ was a treat! We really enjoyed sitting around the fire, mingling with other travelers before dinner."
