Entamanu Camp is perched on the northwest rim of the Ngorongoro Crater with views peering over the 2,000-foot deep caldera on one side and stretching over the broad plains of Serengeti National Park on the other. It’s a view unmatched by any other camp. The movable camp has a particularly light footprint, yet each canvas tent is grounded in stylish comfort, including wooden floors and en suite bathrooms—a one-of-a-kind base for a remarkable safari.

The Camp

Location: Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania
Number of Tents: 6

Location, location, location. That is Entamanu Camp’s highlight. Situated on the northwest rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, it's the only camp that can claim opposing views of both the crater floor and the Serengeti plains. Each of the six tents, including two family tents, sits upon a raised platform and features hand-crafted furnishings from locally-sourced sustainable woods, en suite bathrooms with double basins and a shower, and heaters for the cold evenings and mornings at this high altitude. Your private veranda overlooks an impressive 2,000-foot-deep, 100-square-mile crater, one of the world’s largest. Alternately, gaze toward the Serengeti’s vast southern plains. The intimate camp has a large, central tent with a lounge full of plush sofas and a dining area where meals are shared at a long, family-style table.

Wildlife Viewing & Activities

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a protected World Heritage Site and the Ngorongoro Crater has been heralded as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. This renowned wildlife haven is home to some 25,000 large animals including blue wildebeest, Burchell's zebra, black rhino, elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard, cheetah, hippo and one of the densest known populations of Maasai lion. The crater floor is mostly open grassland, while the crater highlands include montane forest and bushland. In the southwest part of the crater, Lake Magadi is often home to large flocks of lesser flamingo. Most travelers descend into the crater in the early morning to make either a half- or full-day wildlife drive, including a picnic lunch. Walks can sometimes be enjoyed along areas of the crater rim as well.

The below chart helps to illustrate major wildlife sightings often experienced in the Ngorongoro Crater. Seasonally, flamingos may be seen on the lake, and there is always a high concentration of antelopes and predators. Other typical sightings may include gazelles, warthog, ostrich and a number of other mammals, birds and reptiles. Exact sightings will depend on seasonality and wildlife movements.
