Wildlife Viewing & Activities
Gorilla trekking is the primary focus in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, though a host of other nature and cultural activities is also on offer. To participate in one of the most extraordinary wildlife viewing opportunities on the planet, it is essential to pre-purchase permits: only eight visitors per day, per family of habituated gorillas, are privileged to spend up to one hour watching these highly endangered creatures. Birdwatching in the park is also a popular pastime, with nearly 350 bird species recorded. Of particular interest are the 23 species endemic to the Albertine Rift and at least 14 recorded nowhere else in Uganda. Butterfly watching is possible in the forest also, with Bwindi being home to over 200 species. Forest walks and tours of local villages and tribes round out the optional activities.
Bwindi offers some of the best mountain gorilla viewing in Africa. Other primate viewing may include colobus monkeys, chimpanzee, as well as eight other primate species. Rarer sightings may include elephant, giant forest hog and African civet. Exact sightings will depend on seasonality and wildlife movements.

Conservation
As part of Buhoma Lodge’s commitment as an organization with a responsible tourism policy, the lodge has been designed using sustainable local materials where possible with the emphasis on natural products, which has in turn given support to local communities and businesses. As much as possible, supplies are obtained from local sources, and staff are also generally recruited locally and trained on site. The lodge water supply is gravity-fed, and solar power is used for lighting with power points limited to a central area allocated for recharging cameras and videos.
