The Swahili word "angama" means "hanging or suspended in mid-air," and that is the sense one feels at Angama Mara. Perched on an escarpment above the Great Rift Valley, the lodge overlooks the expansive plains of the Maasai Mara. From here, you have access to the exclusive Mara Triangle, where there are far more animals than people, while returning each evening to all the comforts of an exquisitely designed lodge that has no peer.

The Camp

Location: Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya
Number of Rooms: 30 (two independent camps of 15 suites each)

Uniquely positioned at the western edge of the Maasai Mara National Reserve, Angama Mara enjoys a location like none other, perched high on an escarpment at the edge of the Great Rift Valley that winds through East Africa. Two distinctly independent camps are comprised of 15 tented suites each. Every glass-fronted tent offers incredible views over the vast Mara plains. Beyond the glass doors, a private veranda floats above a landscape that stretches as far as the eye can see. Each suite is more than 1,000 square feet, features hardwood floors and draped canvas, and is furnished with a large bed, wardrobe, ceiling fans, sitting area, vanity area with double sinks, a bath tub hidden behind a folding screen and an en suite shower. The indoor-outdoor central living and dining areas are beautifully designed, and a massive deck overhangs the escarpment. The Pavilion features a swimming pool, fitness center, safari shop and beading studio. Dining options are catered to your preference, with deck dining, bush meals and private dining all available.

Wildlife Viewing & Activities

Angama Mara's extraordinary location provides access to the exclusive Mara Triangle, the northwesternmost section of the Maasai Mara, managed independently from the rest of the reserve by the not-for-profit Mara Conservancy, and an area that not many travelers can enter. Embark at dawn via a private road that puts you in the heart of the action in just 10 minutes. Enjoy wildlife drives in open 4x4 Land Cruisers, venturing into this wild and rewarding area of the Maasai Mara. Search for the Big Five plus cheetah, hyena, giraffe, zebra, an array of antelope species, and 570 recorded bird species. Venture out with a Maasai guide on a walking safari along the escarpment. Birding is especially spectacular here, but you may also spot a herd of buffalo below on the plains. The location of Angama Mara is also near the site where many scenes from the movie "Out of Africa" were filmed. Take a picnic lunch and let a Maasai guide share it all!

The Maasai Mara is home to an abundance of resident wildlife year-round. The great migration of nearly two million wildebeest and zebra is at its peak between late July and early October, while the local Loita wildebeest migration typically arrives in June. Other typical sightings may include a number of antelopes, endemic birds and reptiles. Exact sightings will depend on rain patterns and wildlife movements.
