Wildlife Viewing & Activities
Acacia House sits in the secluded Ol Chorro Losoit Valley within the beautiful Lemek Hills, far off the typical tourist trail. This private home is within the 70,000-acre Mara North Conservancy, from which it has operated its wilderness expeditions for more than 20 years. You are guaranteed an exceptional game-viewing experience in the hills, valleys, plains and rivers of the reserve, exploring the very best locations the Maasai Mara ecosystem has to offer. The plains are rich in wildlife, and elephant, zebra and other plains game frequently come to graze on the luscious grass around Acacia House. The Maasai Mara is, of course, famous for its big cats and the Mara North Conservancy is no exception. Lion stalk the plains in search of prey, while the ever-elusive leopard sneaks stealthily in and out of the bushes and cheetah burst into glorious action through the grass.
The very best time for rewarding game viewing is in the cooler early mornings and late afternoons, when the animals are at their most active. Depending on the season, your day may start slightly earlier or later, but the general pace of life at Acacia House is focused on giving you the very best possible game-viewing experience. Because the house is private, it allow you to enjoy your safari 100% on your own terms, both your guide and your personal chef will consult with you daily to discuss how you’d like to plan your day.
Having your own private vehicle and guide is very family friendly, allowing you to set the pace of your viewing experiences to suit your own needs and schedule. During bush walks, your Maasai guide will teach the children all about bush skills, including spoor and dung identification, animal tracking, beetles, bugs and birds. And when they aren’t splashing in the pool back at home, you may well find them in the kitchen baking sweet treats with the staff.
The culture of the natural guardians of this land, the Maasai, is both complex and fascinating. Time spent with the local guides in their home communities is a rich and rewarding experience, often the most memorable moment of a safari here. A cultural visit is included in your stay.
The Maasai Mara is home to an abundance of resident wildlife year-round. The great migration of nearly two million wildebeest and zebra is at its peak between late July and early October, while the local Loita wildebeest migration typically arrives in June. Other typical sightings may include a number of antelopes, endemic birds and reptiles. Exact sightings will depend on rain patterns and wildlife movements.
