Our Expert Says
This is an elegant place to be sure, a throwback to African hospitality of days gone by. In fact, the architecture is based on South African farms, with details of Dutch African history apparent at every turn.

Wildlife Viewing & Activities
The Ngorongoro Crater is rightly considered one of the wonders of the natural world. Here, within the precipitous confines of the world's largest unbroken volcanic caldera, we find one of the densest concentrations of game in all of Africa. Though the crater is just 100 square miles in area, it offers a wide diversity of habitats including acacia forest, swamp, woodland, short grass, long grass and riverine habitats. The park is famous for its lion, cheetah, old bull elephants, Cape buffalo, herds of wildebeest and amazing bird life. The crater also boasts the world’s highest density of hyena, which competes fiercely with the dominant lion population for food. With a little luck, it’s possible to see the endangered black black rhino – a rare treat in northern Tanzania. In addition to daily nature drives activities here include bicycling, horseback riding, excursions to Lake Manyara and Olduvai Gorge, visits to Masai markets and guided walks around the estate.
The below chart helps to illustrate major wildlife sightings often experienced in the Ngorongoro Crater. Seasonally, flamingos may be seen on the lake, and there is always a high concentration of antelopes and predators. Other typical sightings may include gazelles, warthog, ostrich and a number of other mammals, birds and reptiles. Exact sightings will depend on seasonality and wildlife movements.
