Rekero Tented Camp sits in the heart of the Maasai Mara’s feline predator country, and the camp was the locus for the crew of DisneyNature’s 2011 film African Cats. Situated at the confluence of the Mara and Talek rivers, Rekero is recognized as the prime site within the Maasai Mara National Reserve to view the main wildebeest crossing during the annual migration.
Our Expert Says
Rekero’s location is superb—right near the Mara and Talek rivers—one of the famed river crossing points for the migration. The staff here is particularly warm and welcoming, too.

Wildlife Viewing & Activities
Rekero is an eco-conscious camp ideally situated to view the annual migration of over one million wildebeest and 200,000 zebra from the Serengeti through the Maasai Mara. Every year the camp is closed down for two months to allow the bush and its wildlife inhabitants to return to the site. Wildlife viewing is done on foot with experienced Maasai and Il Dorobo guides and on wildlife drives in custom 4x4 vehicles. Rekero is renowned for excellent big-cat sightings. Elephant, buffalo, hippo and crocodile all thrive near the adjacent river and pools, and you may see “The Brigadier,” an elderly male buffalo who regally guards the entrance to the camp. Cultural visits to the local communities are available, and guests can opt for a hot air balloon flight over the plains (additional cost). Bush picnics can be arranged on all-day wildlife drives, while dinners in camp are a romantic affair, illuminated by lamplight in the dining tent.
The Maasai Mara is home to an abundance of resident wildlife year-round. The great migration of nearly two million wildebeest and zebra is at its peak between late July and early October, while the local Loita wildebeest migration typically arrives in June. Other typical sightings may include a number of antelopes, endemic birds and reptiles. Exact sightings will depend on rain patterns and wildlife movements.

Conservation
Captain Duncan Beaton arrived in Kenya from Scotland in 1889, and the family name has subsequently been synonymous with pioneering conservation initiatives in Africa. Today, a fourth generation of the family runs Rekero Camp with their Looseyia family partners, continuing the conservation tradition in order that the ecosystem, its wildlife and local community inhabitants can count on a sustainable future. To provide greater focus on community conservation, Rekero has extended fundraising initiatives in recent years to support local education and environmental programs aimed at protecting the Maasai Mara Conservation Area, an important animal corridor. The area includes an extended ecosystem that is vital to the preservation of the wildlife within Maasai Mara National Reserve itself. Rekero also prides itself on developing strong relationships with its neighbors. By using tourism, Rekero strives to reduce poverty and introduce the benefits of conservation within local communities.
