The Camp
Location: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda
Number of Cottages: 10
This stunning ecolodge features ten large, artfully constructed thatch, stone, stucco and tile bandas (cottages), strategically placed among lush grounds, gardens and winding pathways. Each is simply but elegantly furnished with hardwood floors and furniture, woven grass rugs, distinctive lighting and local crafts. All have en suite bathrooms. Power is solar-generated, and charging facilities are located in common areas as well as in the bandas. The secluded bandas are tucked into individual clearings in the surrounding dense greenery, each with a private terrance overlooking the forest with scenic views. The main draw is of course gorilla trekking, but a day in camp is also mesmerizing, as you spend time on the terrace that juts out into the forest, watching primates and listening to the exotic sounds of birds in the canopy. The lodge’s inviting dining room and well-stocked bar, each with soaring thatched ceiling, also enjoy views of the forested mountainside across the river.
Wildlife Viewing & Activities
Several hundred mountain gorillas reside in Bwindi. The national park’s tracking program allows just a few habituated groups to be visited for one hour each day. Tracking gorillas in the so-called ‘impenetrable' forest is a magical experience. The park is also home to 93 mammal species including 11 types of primates, and nearly 350 species of birds, which may be viewed on naturalist-guided nature walks. Guests may also walk to the river through regenerated bush that the lodge has nurtured as a buffer zone—it has become a favored place for the habituated Rushegura gorilla group, which frequently sleeps here! The group was formed in 2002 when the ambitious silverback Mwirima led a breakaway from the larger Habinyanja group, taking seven family members with him.
Bwindi offers some of the best mountain gorilla viewing in Africa. Other primate viewing may include colobus monkeys, chimpanzee, as well as eight other primate species. Rarer sightings may include elephant, giant forest hog and African civet. Exact sightings will depend on seasonality and wildlife movements.

Conservation
Bwindi Lodge is one of a collection of properties owned by a company that is an award-winning pioneer in ecotourism. As such, the lodge is committed to respecting the culture of local communities, protecting the fragility of its environment, and using resources in sustainable ways. In the forefront of mountain gorilla tourism, the lodge is a signer to the UN Kinshasa Declaration on Great Apes, a high-level political statement for conserving Africa’s endangered gorillas, chimpanzees and other apes. While Bwindi Lodge is exceptionally comfortable, its operators believe that ecotourism in remote areas must balance western standards of comfort with the pressure local people face in obtaining food and clean water. In designing the lodge, therefore, water consumption is reduced, waste disposal controlled and solar power is used instead of generators. Designed to harmonize with the natural environment, the lodge architecture and aesthetics reflect and celebrate the local culture.
