Bateleur Camp overlooks the endless plains of the Maasai Mara National Reserve, offering guests idyllic views of this quintessential African landscape. Tucked deep within a belt of thick riverine forest, each tent is secluded by verdant vegetation. Bateleur lies directly in the path of perhaps the greatest spectacle in the animal kingdom—the annual migration of wildebeest and zebra from the Serengeti.
Our Expert Says
If you want an absolutely prime location on the banks of the river to watch the migration, this is the camp for you. The guides are top of the line and the tents are some of the nicest around. I love that they have the ability to drive in the park and the private reserve for maximum flexibility. My favorite thing was having lunch while watching warthogs a few feet away grazing on the grass.

The Camp
Location: Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya
Number of Tents: 18
Bateleur Camp comprises two intimate camps of nine tented suites each, set among riverine forest on the edge of the Maasai Mara. The tents have a classic elegance, with polished wooden floors and en suite bathrooms with stone-walled showers. Each tent has its own deck overlooking the game-laden plains of the Maasai Mara, and a personal butler ensures that every need is catered to. The main guest areas, shaded by a dense forest canopy, consist of a sitting area with fireplaces and verandas with more extraordinary views. Hand-crafted artifacts, antiques, leather-buttoned Chesterfield sofas, books, crystal and candlelight transport guests back to the romance of the classic safari era. The two camps also share a lap pool, for refreshing exercise. Pan-African meals are served in memorable settings under the stars, followed by fireside port and cigars. Bush breakfasts and romantic sundowners on the edge of the Great Rift Valley offer an unforgettable African experience.

Wildlife Viewing & Activities
Blessed with an astounding year-round concentration of animals and the climax of the Great Migration, Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve provides an unsurpassed wildlife experience. Covering 580 square miles, the Mara is a land of breathtaking vistas and abundant wildlife traversing endless plains. The reserve is a photographer’s dream, full of elephant, buffalo, giraffe, lion and cheetah alongside the migratory wildebeest and zebra. Leopard are frequently encountered, endangered black rhino find retreat in dense thickets, and large rafts of hippo and enormous crocodiles fill the Mara River. The Mara is also home to more than 450 bird species. Morning and afternoon wildlife drives, night drives on the camp’s private concession, guided nature walks with Maasai naturalists and Maasai community visits and lectures are all on offer. Hot air ballooning is also available at additional cost, the ultimate way to go on safari over the Mara plains.
The Maasai Mara is home to an abundance of resident wildlife year-round. The great migration of nearly two million wildebeest and zebra is at its peak between late July and early October, while the local Loita wildebeest migration typically arrives in June. Other typical sightings may include a number of antelopes, endemic birds and reptiles. Exact sightings will depend on rain patterns and wildlife movements.

Conservation
Ecotourism is vital for the future of wildlife conservation in Africa and the associated prosperity of its people. Some estimates predict that over the next decade, tourism will become the single biggest contributor to sub-Saharan African GDP, and the greatest creator of sustainable jobs on the continent. Bateleur Camp strives to protect threatened ecosystems, endangered species and the diversity of its proximate wilderness area through responsible low-impact, high-yield luxury adventure tourism. The camp’s core values are 'Care of the Land, Care of the Wildlife, Care of the People.' By involving local community members in the camp’s work, the camp places an economic emphasis on conservation and wilderness preservation, allowing local communities to benefit by partnering with Bateleur Camp to ensure that wild spaces in Kenya enjoy a bright future.
