Situated in the remote northern Serengeti, Sayari Camp is ideally positioned for exclusivity and wildlife viewing. This luxury tented camp is located minutes from the Mara River, famous for its amazing crossings of thousands of wildebeest and zebra as the annual migration moves through. The rest of the year offers excellent resident wildlife, from big cats and elephant to giraffe and gazelle. The camp also has access to the Lamai wedge, a remote northern corner of the Serengeti, where few other people go.

Our Expert Says

Sayari is stunning, a great way to end a safari. Even when it's not the peak of the migration season, the resident wildlife fills in the gap. If it's not wildebeest crossing the Mara River, it's cheetah hunting and great herds of plains game. The pool is a neat feature, built over natural rocks.

Wildlife Viewing & Activities

The Northern Serengeti is a remote section of the park offering the most diverse experience of diurnal and nocturnal animals, smaller species and flora. During the summer months, the great migration of over a million wildebeest and zebra moves into the area and crosses the Mara River to head up into Kenya. Sayari is minutes from the river, full of hippo and crocodile, and enjoys this spectacle annually. The remainder of the year produces wonderful resident wildlife sightings, including lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, rhino, great herds of antelope, beautiful topi and much more. During the dry season, crossing into the little known Lamai wedge offers a truly wild experience where hardly anyone else goes. Bush breakfasts are distinctly African and highly recommended. Morning and afternoon wildlife drives are a highlight with the option of walking - walks are at additional cost and available for guests 16 and older. Cultural interactions are enjoyed nearby. In camp, the beautiful natural rock pool and bush spa offer respite between your wildlife viewing.

During the famous Great Migration, the wildebeest can be found dropping their young in the southern Serengeti between December and March, and are typically found attempting to cross the Mara River in the northern Serengeti between July and October. The resident wildlife in the park is found year-round. Other typical sightings may include jackal, warthogs and a number of other mammals, birds and reptiles. Exact sightings will depend on rain patterns and wildlife movements.

Conservation

Sayari works closely with the outlying communities of the Serengeti, providing employment opportunities. Additionally, the camp employs up to eight Askaris, or Maasai watchmen, each month from five different villages, alternating so that each of the local communities has an opportunity to earn extra income. The camp also buys its produce from the local communities that have been trained to grow successful gardens and provided the first planting of seeds by the Honeyguide Foundation. This program has grown in such a way that Honeyguide now has a permanent office in the area, and this has become a sustainable source of income for the communities. Guests can also visit local Wakuria villages from the camp, and Sayari supports the Machochwe Secondary School with annual donations. The camp strives to leave zero carbon footprint by recycling all waste, using solar power to heat water, and implementing grey-water recycling, among so many more sustainable efforts.
