Our Expert Says

Klein's is a personal favorite of mine. Perched high on the hillside with incredible views, you can either opt to wildlife drive in their private reserve or head to Serengetti National Park. A visit to the nearby Maasi village is a must.

The Camp

Location: Serengeti National Park, Tanzania
Number of Cottages: 10

Important Note: Though this camp is classified as Distinctive, its charges a Premier-level price for its prime location.

Klein’s Camp is perched on the edge of the Kuka Hills, in a private reserve far from more crowded areas of the Serengeti. Its 10 thatch and stone cottages overlook the surrounding valleys, a vital corridor between the Maasai Mara and the Serengeti, where elephants and giraffe are often spotted moving at a leisurely gait along the slopes. Each intimate cottage is surprisingly elegant, with a romantic canopy bed, en suite bathroom and private veranda. Imbued with vintage safari ambience, the common lounge has whitewashed walls, rich wooden floors, roaring open fireplaces and deep leather chairs in which to while away the midday hours between safari drives. Other common areas include a fully stocked bar, leisure deck, library and curio shop. Even the swimming pool offers unimpeded views of the sprawling plains and sky. Sumptuous dinners are served by candlelight, complete with fine linens and sparking silver.

Wildlife Viewing & Activities

In the strategic northeast corner of the Serengeti, Klein’s Camp sits within a 25,000-acre private wildlife concession. That means that in addition to daytime drives, guests can also enjoy night drives and guided nature walks, both of which are off-limits within the national park. Klein’s Camp offers excellent year-round lion, leopard and cheetah sightings and is home to huge herds of buffalo and elephant. The surrounding woodlands harbor browsing animals such as giraffe, impala, dik-dik and Grant’s gazelle, as well as olive baboon, vervet monkey, bushbaby and a wide variety of birdlife. During the migration nearly two million wildebeest, zebra, eland and gazelle follow the annual rains through the Serengeti to the adjacent Maasai Mara reserve in Kenya in search of prime grazing. As the dense herds move across the plains, predators and scavengers follow in close pursuit. Lion and hyena, as well as the more elusive cheetah and leopard, mingle with the migrating masses while vulture and jackal await the scraps.

During the famous Great Migration, the wildebeest can be found dropping their young in the southern Serengeti between December and March, and are typically found attempting to cross the Mara River in the northern Serengeti between July and October. The resident wildlife in the park is found year-round. Other typical sightings may include jackal, warthogs and a number of other mammals, birds and reptiles. Exact sightings will depend on rain patterns and wildlife movements.

Conservation

Klein's Camp actively collaborates with neighboring Maasai communities on critical conservation, education and healthcare initiatives in the area. In conjunction with the camp’s social development partner, the Africa Foundation, a new health clinic was built in the Ololosokwan community to provide approximately 10,000 Maasai villagers with access to health care and ambulance services. Camp rangers take groups of Maasai children on game drives in order to expose them to the wonders of nature and to help them gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the environment. The camp also provides training, logistical support and equipment to an anti-poaching team comprised of local community members who patrol the concession for illegal hunting activity. The camp supports Mwewe, the only guide-training academy of its kind in northern Tanzania, which offers training to local people so they can become qualified nature guides at lodges. Klein’s Camp reduced its wood consumption by 75% by replacing wood-burning boilers with solar energy geysers.
