Our Expert Says

Grumeti Camp’s year round river front property, complete with hippo chorus, makes it an excellent choice for wildlife viewing in the Western Corridor no matter the season. In June and July it is unquestionably the best camp from which to watch the migrating herds as they cross the Grumeti River and head on towards Kenya.

Wildlife Viewing & Activities

Grumeti Serengeti Tented Camp sits on the banks of the Grumeti River in a remote corner of the sprawling Serengeti Plain, deservedly one of the most celebrated wildlife reserves in the world. Every year in June and July, the annual Great Migration passes through as thousands of wildebeest, zebra and other hoofed herbivores bravely attempt to cross the river, risking the jaws of some of Africa’s largest crocodiles. Activities here revolve around twice-daily wildlife drives across the endless Serengeti plains. Highlights include big prides of lions, solitary leopards and the resident hippos that often make their way into camp. In the late afternoon the river comes to life as herds of antelope, buffalo and elephant come to drink. When the Great Migration moves through the Grumeti area, game drives concentrate on the massed herds and the various carnivores that follow in close pursuit. Optional activities include balloon safaris and day trips to nearby Lake Victoria.

During the famous Great Migration, the wildebeest can be found dropping their young in the southern Serengeti between December and March, and are typically found attempting to cross the Mara River in the northern Serengeti between July and October. The resident wildlife in the park is found year-round. Other typical sightings may include jackal, warthogs and a number of other mammals, birds and reptiles. Exact sightings will depend on rain patterns and wildlife movements.

Conservation

Grumeti Serengeti Tented Camp actively supports important wildlife research and conservation initiatives. Grumeti rangers are engaged in long-term monitoring projects of eagles and vultures, as well as troops of black and white colobus monkeys that live in the riverine forest along the Grumeti River. Studies of resident prides of lion, sponsored by the lodge and conducted by guides, have produced valuable data for the Serengeti Research Institute. Grumeti Serengeti Tented Camp also works to improve access to quality health care received by its staff and local community members, employing a full-time doctor for camp staff and the local community. The camp also works closely with the Africa Foundation to encourage staff and local community members to participate in an innovative wellness program, which emphasizes immunological health through proper diet, vitamin and mineral supplements, and the cultivation of a positive attitude. In addition, the camp teaches community members how to cultivate organic vegetable gardens.
