Wildlife Viewing & Activities
Volcanoes National Park is home to golden monkey, duiker, buffalo, hyena, and bushbuck. However, its star attraction is the mountain gorilla. About one third of the world’s endangered population is found here. Dian Fossey’s 18 years of research brought the plight of the gorillas to the world’s attention. Now, trekking on foot to see them up close is one of the most thrilling and poignant wildlife encounters possible. Hiking with your guide to reach a gorilla group, up the steep mountainside and through the vine-wrapped rainforest, is part of the adventure, lasting anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours. Anticipation rises as the guide spots signs of gorillas nearby. You sit for an hour among the gentle giants going about their daily lives: feeding, playing, resting and nurturing their young. Looking into their eyes and feeling an unspoken communication with these intelligent primates can be life-changing. Other activities include hikes to see golden monkeys, Bisoke Volcano and Dian Fossey’s grave and visits to local villages, at additional cost.
Volcanoes National Park offers some of the most established mountain gorilla viewing in Africa. Golden monkey treks are also available from the park headquarters.
