Atop two hills near the Ngorongoro Crater, two different lodgings share one purpose: guests who stay at Rhotia Valley Tented Lodge directly benefit the residents of Rhotia Valley Children's Home, a safe and welcoming residence for orphans that is adjacent to the safari lodge. The lodge offers a host of comforts in typical African style, while proceeds from every stay directly contribute to the wellbeing of the children who live nearby.

Conservation

Environmental initiatives abound at Rhotia Valley Tented Lodge, from solar thermal and photovoltaic installations to an organic garden that provides the vegetables for the lodge restaurant. A stay at the lodge contributes directly to the wellbeing of the children at nearby Rhotia Valley Children’s Home. In a venture that functions as an integrated operation, Rhotia Valley’s owners set out to create a community development project with a tourism component. Most of the time, the opposite is true. As a result, the primary focus of all aspects of Rhotia Valley’s operation is the Children’s Home and the benefit of the local community. With the profits from the lodge, community members strive to guarantee that these orphaned children have a safe home and happy youth, with healthy food, clean water, adequate clothing and quality education – and an appreciation, for the future, of the interconnectedness of community and conservation in sustaining a healthy Africa.

Review Rhotia Valley Tented Camp
Month of travel: June
"I stayed at Rhotia Valley 2 nights in June, 2013, while visiting Ngorongoro Crater. This is a terrific camp with a great mission. The camp is owned and operated by a retired Dutch physician couple. They also operate and support the nearby (100 yards away) Rhotia Valley Children’s Home. The lodge provides employment for the local residents, support for the children’s home and a great experience for the guests. A true win-win. First the camp. This is a permanent tented camp. All the tents are comfortable with running water (cold and hot) and a nice veranda overlooking the valley. The dining building is a permanent structure. The bar outside has plenty of sitting area with an even better view of the valley. The cash bar, is well stocked, and reasonably priced. The food is excellent. One night, we had eggplant Mousaka which was probably the best meal of the entire 2 week safari. The lodge has a large vegetable garden where they grow many of the vegetables they serve. The children’s home is supported by private foundations and the lodge. The entire complex has been in operation about 6 years. Everything was built very quickly and built well. This is quite an achievement considering the roads in Tanzania, not to mention availability of building supplies. The bricks for the children’s home were made right on site. The home consists of several separate buildings. A house “mother” is in charge of each building. They also have their own vegetable garden, dairy (saw them make yogurt), and bakery. In the spirit of self-sufficiency and conservation, cow manure is converted to fuel. The children also receive an education. They all looked happy. This was a very worthwhile and enjoyable stay. I would love to return. This camp is a little further from the main road that where I stayed last time, but it was worth it. It just meant we had a longer African back massage. Then, we went to the crater. This is my second visit and it was as good as the first. This is a must see park. Great diversity and lots of wildlife. They don’t call it “The Garden of Eden” for nothing. I feel fortunate to have been able to visit the crater twice. I wish everyone on this planet could too. "

"Rhotia Valley is a special place. A great location along the Northern Circuit safari route, it's positioned on a hill overlooking a beautiful landscape. The tents are relatively basic, but very nice. The central lodge area is well designed and very comfortable. But what makes this place so special is the fact that the Rhotia Valley Lodge exists largely to support the Rhotia Valley School that lives on an adjacent hill. Orphaned children from local communities are taken in at the school, provided room and board, and given an education that otherwise would have been out-of-reach for these underprivileged kids. During your visit, you are invited to visit the school and meet the kids that your stay is helping to support. It is an inspiring example of how sustainable tourism is providing direct benefits to the local communities. Very impressive to experience first-hand!"
