Review For Rhotia Valley Tented Camp

I stayed at Rhotia Valley 2 nights in June, 2013, while visiting Ngorongoro Crater. This is a terrific camp with a great mission. The camp is owned and operated by a retired Dutch physician couple. They also operate and support the nearby (100 yards away) Rhotia Valley Children’s Home. The lodge provides employment for the local residents, support for the children’s home and a great experience for the guests. A true win-win. First the camp. This is a permanent tented camp. All the tents are comfortable with running water (cold and hot) and a nice veranda overlooking the valley. The dining building is a permanent structure. The bar outside has plenty of sitting area with an even better view of the valley. The cash bar, is well stocked, and reasonably priced. The food is excellent. One night, we had eggplant Mousaka which was probably the best meal of the entire 2 week safari. The lodge has a large vegetable garden where they grow many of the vegetables they serve. The children’s home is supported by private foundations and the lodge. The entire complex has been in operation about 6 years. Everything was built very quickly and built well. This is quite an achievement considering the roads in Tanzania, not to mention availability of building supplies. The bricks for the children’s home were made right on site. The home consists of several separate buildings. A house “mother” is in charge of each building. They also have their own vegetable garden, dairy (saw them make yogurt), and bakery. In the spirit of self-sufficiency and conservation, cow manure is converted to fuel. The children also receive an education. They all looked happy. This was a very worthwhile and enjoyable stay. I would love to return. This camp is a little further from the main road that where I stayed last time, but it was worth it. It just meant we had a longer African back massage. Then, we went to the crater. This is my second visit and it was as good as the first. This is a must see park. Great diversity and lots of wildlife. They don’t call it “The Garden of Eden” for nothing. I feel fortunate to have been able to visit the crater twice. I wish everyone on this planet could too.
