Bisate Lodge’s six-villa accommodation introduces a completely new and sustainable model to the area. The lodge is working together with local farmers to rehabilitate land along the border of Volcanoes National Park. The property encompasses more than 66 acres of unusual and varied topography that shield the lodge from any unnatural disturbances, including light from the nearby towns of Kinigi and Musanze. The lodge gazes directly at towering Mount Bisok and offers a feeling of being inside the park, with easy access to park headquarters for gorilla and golden monkey treks. Designed using traditional Rwandan building elements, the spherical, thatched villas mimic the landscape’s rolling hills. Each villa has a bedroom, sitting area, en suite bathroom and private deck with stunning mountain views. Social areas include a central lounge, dining and bar areas, a viewing deck and wine cellar.

Wildlife Viewing & Activities

Volcanoes National Park is part of the Virunga Massif, which is capped by six extinct volcanic peaks that are home to mountain gorillas, golden monkeys and more. Only 80 people per day receive permits to hike and view gorillas in the park. Treks with specialist park guides and trackers begin early in the morning. Your hike can take a short 30 minutes or up to several hours, depending upon the location of the gorilla family that day. Once you meet up with the gorillas, you will enjoy an hour with these majestic creatures. We recommend making two gorilla treks, plus a golden monkey trek. Bisate Lodge enriches your experience through evening presentations and informal discussions with an on-site gorilla researcher, bird and nature walks, trails to roam, visits to the local tree nursery, vegetable gathering from an organic co-op, exploration of nearby villages, coffee and tea tastings, and more.

Volcanoes National Park offers some of the most established mountain gorilla viewing in Africa. Golden monkey treks are also available from the park headquarters.
