The Camp
Location: Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda
Number of Tents: 10
This restful lodge enjoys a tranquil setting with superb views, especially toward the west for Africa’s legendary sunsets. Unique rooms are built on wooden platforms raised on stilts. Suspended under the thatched roof is a spacious and comfortable canvas tent equipped with en suite facilities that have hot and cold running water, showers and flush toilets. Each luxury tented room is set apart from the others, enabling guests to enjoy the natural surroundings in complete seclusion. The main lounge and dining area is a large thatched structure built of rocks, the wood of dead weathered olive trees found on the land, and native grasses. Bright colors and fabrics provide vibrant accents against the natural materials. Below the dining area, an infinity swimming pool stretches out from the rocks and seems to disappear into the vast landscape beyond. From the dining and pool area, guests can enjoy the view of a westward-oriented valley and its stunning sunsets over Lake Mburo National Park.

Wildlife Viewing & Activities
Lake Mburo National Park’s sculptured landscape, with high hills and rugged ridges, is a varied mosaic of habitats. Grassy valleys, rocky outcrops, bushy thickets, acacia-studded savannas, large seasonal and permanent swamps and the lake itself mean that a tremendous wealth of plants and animals thrive here. Common species include leopard, reedbuck, sitatunga, bushbuck, waterbuck, topi, warthog, hippopotamus, buffalo, mongoose, vervet monkey, baboon, badger, crocodile and nocturnal creatures such as jackal, serval, spotted hyena and aardvark. Other frequently seen species are found in virtually no other parks in Uganda, such as zebra, eland and impala. An abundance of birds also flourishes in the extensive wetlands. Mihingo guests can participate in 4x4 wildlife drives, guided bush walks, horseback safaris and boat cruises on Lake Mburo. Back at camp, enjoy an afternoon in the pool, an on-site massage (proceeds benefit the Mihingo Leopard Conservation Project), or watching for zebra and impala that come to the nearby waterhole to drink.
The below chart helps to illustrate major wildlife sightings often experienced in Lake Mburo. Other typical sightings may include topi, impala, duiker, reedbuck, oribi and a number of other mammals, birds and reptiles. Exact sightings will depend on seasonality and wildlife movements.

Conservation
Mihingo Lodge blends high-end safari lodge style and services with environmentally smart design. Rainwater is captured and solar power harnessed to fuel lodge operations. Committed to improving conditions for both the local community and the wildlife in the park, Mihingo Lodge educates local people about the critical role that much-maligned predators and scavengers play in Lake Mburo National Park’s delicate ecosystem. The lodge also hires community members for its staff. The lodge created and funds the Mihingo Conservation and Community Development Foundation (CCDF), whose main endeavor is the Mihingo Leopard Project. When a farmer reports livestock killed by leopards or hyenas, the CCDF investigates and verifies the kill and compensates the farmer. This prevents the farmer’s past practice of poisoning the carcass to kill other predators, which would feed on it. Mihingo CCDF staff also advise farmers on how to protect their livestock from predator attacks in order to reduce human-wildlife conflict.
