Our Expert Says
I love the location of this hotel, right in the middle of Stone Town. The restaurant is excellent, serving a wide range of dishes including fresh seafood. The hotel sits right at the water’s edge, where you can watch the traditional dhows sail by. Everything is white, fresh and colorfully accented with traditional wood carvings, tapestries and antiques.

The Hotel
Location: Stone Town, Zanzibar
Number of Rooms: 42
The Zanzibar Serena Inn boasts an exquisite location: on the waterfront in Stone Town, the historic 'old town' of Zanzibar, with a front-row view of the turquoise ocean and white-sailed dhows flitting past. Just 15 minutes from the airport, the Zanzibar Serena is a world apart. Its rooms offer a tranquil tropical oasis, constructed in traditional Swahili style with high ceilings made of mangrove poles, shuttered windows and cool white walls. Rooms are adorned with arched niches, brass lamps and feature traditionally carved furniture with basket-weave and ceramic inlay. Four-poster, net-draped beds are dressed in crisp white and blue linens, while louvered doors open onto private balconies, some of which feature free-standing hammocks. Dining is offered at two main restaurants, including an open rooftop terrace and the lavish Baharia, featuring Zanzibari cuisine blending blends freshly caught seafood, local spices, luscious fruits and colorful vegetables.

Wildlife Viewing & Activities
Although not a primary wildlife viewing destination, Zanzibar is home to the Zanzibar red colobus monkey and the critically endangered Ader’s duiker. You will be very lucky to see the Zanzibar servaline genet here as well. Other sightings may include bush babies, mongoose, and Zanzibar tree hyrax. Birds and marine life are in abundance. Exact sightings depend on seasonality and wildlife movements.
