Matemwe Lodge, a small collection of thatched, whitewashed beach cottages, is located in a remote section of Zanzibar’s northeast coast, about an hour outside of Stone Town. The exceptionally scenic and secluded retreat lies just beyond a palm-fringed fishing village, set on a coral outcropping with blissful views of the beach and lagoon. Twelve bungalow suites, backed by tropical flower gardens, front the sea, with some of Zanzibar’s best white sand beaches just steps away.
Our Expert Says
Matemwe Lodge has been precisely built atop a rock outcrop, surrounded by colorful, herbaceous gardens, just on the northern edge of Matemwe village. This small family owned and operated beach lodge is a great option for families, honeymooners or single travelers who are looking for a comfortable and exclusive getaway. Expect hammocks, bright colors and seaside breezes to whisk you away into deep relaxation.

Twelve well-spaced private bungalow suites are beautifully situated along a coral reef overlooking the sea, lagoon and Mnemba Atoll, famous for Zanzibar’s best diving and snorkeling. Ocean-view balconies feature hammocks to savor the sea breeze and sunset views. Rooms 9 and 10 enjoy private plunge pools. The infinity pool with its poolside bar offers an alternative for afternoon siestas. The main lodge is just a short walk from the powder-fine beach through flower-filled gardens.
