Gracious and secluded, Ilala Lodge Hotel is the ideal base from which to experience the majestic wonder of Victoria Falls. Situated on the Zimbabwean side of the falls, it is the closest hotel to the falls as well as the Vic Falls town center. It also borders the national park, and wild animals often graze on the hotel lawns with the spray of the falls in the background.

Ilala Lodge was the first place I ever stayed on the continent of Africa more than a decade ago, and it still is one that I recommend for those who don’t feel the need for the colonial, white-glove experience offered by the Vic Falls Hotel. With mongoose roaming the grounds, and the spray from the falling water drifting through the gardens, you don’t sacrifice experience for proximity to the entrance of the falls.

The ambience at Ilala Lodge evokes the atmosphere of the early days of exploration in Africa. Décor is warm and muted, with understated elegance. Ilala Lodge offers 32 standard rooms and two deluxe suites. All rooms are air-conditioned and feature railway sleeper teak furnishings, overhead fans, coffee- and tea-making facilities, and an en suite bathroom with bathtub and separate shower. French doors lead onto either the open lawn and gardens or a balcony with a view of the falls’ spray. The sparkling pool beckons for a refreshing splash and the poolside cocktail bar is a sure winner at the end of any day. The Palm Restaurant offers a la carte dining at tables furnished with colonial-era wicker chairs and white linen tablecloths. Tables on the terrace under the African night sky with the roar of the falls in the distance create the setting for an unforgettably romantic evening.
