Emerson Spice consists of three adjoining World Heritage Site buildings in the exotic kasbah of Zanzibar’s Stone Town. Two of the facades face a quaint square at the end of historic Tharia Street, a principal thoroughfare for walking tours of the city. The third facade looks down Tharia Street toward the Anglican Cathedral and the slave market. Nestled among the rear facades is a squared private courtyard containing an ancient well.

The Hotel

The main building of Emerson Spice Hotel is an inspired and lovingly restored merchant’s huse, housing 11 stylishly furnished and individually decorated rooms structured around an airy central courtyard. The Secret Garden restaurant is tucked into a walled garden, retreating from the bustle of the city. The rooftop Tea House hosts one of Stone Town’s most renowned restaurants, which offers a stylish ambience amid the sound of the calls to prayer from the town’s many mosques. Each room in the boutique hotel is unique from the others with varied layouts, decoration and facilities. Each has an en suite bathroom and most have a balcony, veranda or sitting area.

Please note that this hotel has many stairs and no elevator and may not be suitable for some travelers.

Wildlife Viewing & Activities

Although not a primary wildlife viewing destination, Zanzibar is home to the Zanzibar red colobus monkey and the critically endangered Ader’s duiker. You will be very lucky to see the Zanzibar servaline genet here as well. Other sightings may include bush babies, mongoose, and Zanzibar tree hyrax. Birds and marine life are in abundance. Exact sightings depend on seasonality and wildlife movements.
