Wildlife Viewing & Activities
Wake up to the sounds of the rainforest, enjoy a hearty breakfast and prepare yourself for an exciting meeting with the chimpanzees! Uganda is home to humanity’s closest relative, the chimpanzee, a delightful ape whose evocative call echoes through the dense forest long before we spy them. The best place for an unforgettable encounter with chimps is Kibale Forest National Park, home to the greatest variety and concentration of primates anywhere in East Africa. Thirteen different primate species live in this small 216-square-mile park, including the black-and-white colobus monkey, blue monkey, red-tailed monkey, grey-cheeked mangabey and bushbaby. The lush forest harbors a population of more than 1,000 wild chimpanzees, some of which are habituated to human visitors. A vast number of other mammals are found in Kibale Forest as well, including forest elephant, bushbuck, duiker, bush pig and buffalo. More than 325 bird species have been recorded in the park, making it one of Africa’s premier birding locations.
Kibale’s focus is chimpanzee viewing, as well as the 12 other primate species, including the black and white colobus monkey, red-tailed and blue monkeys, and Ugandan red colobus monkey. Rarer sightings may include elephant, duikers, warthogs, and buffalo. There are a number of unique bird species. Exact sightings will depend on seasonality and wildlife movements.
