Wildlife Viewing & Activities
Ruaha National Park is a rugged wilderness of dense woodlands and baobab-studded plains. Encompassing close to thirteen thousand square miles, it is Tanzania’s largest national park, yet receives relatively few visitors and retains a palpable sense of wildness matched by few places in Africa. Ruaha is one of the last strongholds of the endangered African wild dog and boasts one of the continent’s densest concentrations of elephants; in the dry season it is not uncommon to see over 100 of them in a single drive. With vast herds of buffalo, cheetah stalking the open plains, huge prides of lions and over 530 bird species, Ruaha offers one of the most exciting and diverse safari experiences anywhere. Activities at Mwagusi Safari Camp include twice daily nature drives in open 4x4 Land Rovers and expertly guided walking safaris, a chance to get an up-close look at small mammals, insects and plants that are often overlooked on nature drives.
Each region has varying concentrations and species of wildlife, and the below chart helps to illustrate major wildlife sightings often experienced in the area. Other typical sightings may include giraffe, zebra, impala, jackal, bat-eared fox and a number of other mammals, birds and reptiles. Exact sightings will depend on seasonality and wildlife movements.

Conservation
Mwagusi Safari Camp supports the Foxes’ Community and Wildlife Conservation Trust (FCWCT), a grassroots initiative of the Fox Family. FCWCT works to provide shelter, sustenance, education and medical care to the increasing number of orphans and foster families in the Mufindi District of Tanzania. As a result of HIV/AIDS, many children are left orphaned or are required to care and provide for their sick parents, grandparents or younger siblings. To date, with support from Mwagusi Safari Camp, FCWCT has built and staffed six orphanage dormitories and made improvements to local schools and clinics. Now plans are underway to expand the orphan center to 60 beds, improve education, refurbish the educational facilities, provide outreach services in local villages to AIDS orphans and construct a counseling and treatment center to treat HIV/AIDS patients. Other projects include upgrading a local clinic to a full-service hospital, so that local people don’t have to travel over 30 miles to the nearest hospital for treatment.
