Our Expert Says
Tuningi is a small, homey lodge. There aren't many that have such a spread for children to play outside, so it's definitely a kid-friendly place, probably one of the best. And with Madikwe being malaria-free, it's an ideal spot for young families.

Every room features a beautiful stone fireplace, four-poster bed with mosquito netting, and an en suite bathroom with a bathtub surrounded by windows, plus a grand outdoor shower. The main lodge has a lounge, dining area and centralized swimming pool that are flanked on one side by an outdoor play area for children, including African artifacts, art supplies, a safari tent and movies in case of inclement weather, and on the other side by a dinner deck overlooking the productive waterhole where elephant, antelope and even predators come to drink.
The family rooms are a perfect fit for parents traveling with children, with two en-suite bedrooms and a shared living and dining area.
Wildlife Viewing & Activities
Tuningi is set within the famous Madikwe Game Reserve in northern South Africa just along the Botswana border. Madikwe has become a world-famous wildlife destination for the Big Five—lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino—as well as cheetah, wild dog and desert antelope such as the oryx and springbok. The habitat is a fusion of savanna grassland and thorny scrub, allowing one of the widest varieties of wildlife to thrive here. Favorite species such as zebra, giraffe, kudu, warthog and a variety of birds are seen often and in great numbers. Activities include wildlife drives in the early morning and late afternoon, and nature walks during the dry season when the bush is less dense. For children, special wildlife drives are arranged, and they will enjoy collecting evidence of wildlife, tracing animal tracks around the waterhole, and treasure hunts for nests, bones, eggs and other wonders of the bush!
Madikwe's common large mammal and predator sightings are illustrated in the below chart. Other typical sightings may include warthogs, baboons, a variety of birds and a number of other mammals and reptiles. Exact sightings will depend on weather and wildlife movements.

Conservation
Conservation is a strong theme at Tuningi. All guests have the opportunity to sponsor at an additional cost an event such as DNA sampling, rhino notching, horn infusion or Madikwe's contraception program, getting close to wild rhino, lion and elephant for the sake of preserving the animals and their habitats. One person will be able to dart a rhino from a helicopter while everyone else waits on the ground. Guests can be involved in taking DNA samples, measurements, and administering microchips, which go into the rhino's horn. A vet is always present to rouse the rhino and ensure there are no complications.
