Wildlife Viewing & Activities

The Elephant Camp offers close interaction with wildlife, especially with orphaned elephants at the Wild Horizons Wildlife Sanctuary. All guests have an opportunity to meet these elephants, which were saved from culling operations in Zimbabwe. Additionally, the sanctuary’s resident leopard, Sylvester, rescued when he was two days old, often frequents the camp for up-close and personal encounters! With close proximity to Victoria Falls, there are numerous optional activities available: elephant-back or horseback safaris, a guided walk with lions, a walking tour of Victoria Falls or helicopter ride overhead, bungee jumping and whitewater rafting. The craft village at Victoria Falls is a great place to pick up some souvenirs and support the local economy. Camp staff can help arrange these outings and provide shuttle service. For those wanting downtime and pampering, select spa treatments are available in the privacy of your suite.

Victoria Falls offers direct access to Zimbabwe and Botswana’s most wildlife-rich game reserves and national parks, from Hwange and Mana Pools National Parks in Zimbabwe to the Okavango Delta, Linyanti Reserve and Kalahari Desert of Botswana. It also serves to break up a safari with both natural and cultural attractions.

Conservation

Wild Horizons Wildlife Trust, which is closely associated with The Elephant Camp, is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing and promoting environmental conservation. Projects focus on four areas: community outreach, wildlife research, wildlife orphanage, and conservation training. The Trust is committed to protecting the area’s indigenous fauna and flora, in collaboration with appropriate authorities, local communities and other stakeholders. Projects include rehabilitation of injured or orphaned wildlife, anti-poaching and wildlife veterinary assistance, assisting with community based projects, and a children's conservation education program. Research projects are designed to find sustainable ways to protect wildlife such as the elephant. These projects incorporate ways of releasing animals and finding solutions to the community’s human/wildlife conflicts. The wildlife orphanage programs are set up to protect, rescue and rehabilitate animals that are either endangered or have been injured, abandoned or orphaned through human interference.
