Sarara Camp is set in the heart of 850,000 acres of exclusive wilderness along the Mathews Range in northern Kenya. The setting is dramatic, a fabled landscape from stories of explorers, wild and remote. And with just six tents, the area remains as exclusive and removed as it once was. Bead with the Samburu, learn the trade of the Il Konono blacksmiths, soar in a helicopter above an elephant herd, or witness an age old tradition at the singing wells.

The Camp

Location: Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy, Mathews Range, Kenya
Number of Tents: 6

Sarara Camp features just six luxury tents, each placed for stunning views of the Mathews Range of mountains and the water hole that draws wildlife from all around. The tents are made of light, draped canvas with tall ceilings, beautiful rugs, cozy seating and warm linens. The en suite bathroom features hot and cold running water and an outdoor shower with a view. In the mornings, a personal wake up call at your tent is accompanied by tea, coffee or juice. There is an organic garden on property, and sumptuous meals are taken on the decks overlooking the range if weather permits. A swimming pool also offers respite after your game drive or a nature walk, and you can simply sit and view elephant at the water hole or playful monkeys in the trees.

Wildlife Viewing & Activities

Situated in the Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy, an area of 850,000 acres of pristine wilderness in the Mathews Range, Sarara has established itself as one of the best places for quality leopard viewing in East Africa and for close-up sightings of the normally extremely shy lesser kudu antelope. African wild dogs are sometimes encountered in the Sarara valley. Elephant, buffalo, giraffe, gerenuk, impala and warthogs are regularly seen on wildlife drives and bush walks. Unusual sightings include striped hyena, aardwolf, civet cat, African wild cat, greater kudu, Grevy’s zebra and cheetah. Unique to Sarara is the "singing wells" experience. The Samburu people have a wonderful tradition, which guests are welcome to observe. Every morning the Samburu warriors bring their cattle to the dry river bed near the camp. The warriors begin to dig deep wells to provide drinking water for their cattle. Naked, the warriors sing as they dig. The singing creates a rhythm that synchronizes the team work as buckets are lifted from one warrior to the next as the well is dug. But the songs also have the additional function of calling each warrior’s cattle to his particular well. The experience cannot be photographed. Sarara is the one of the only places in the world where one can view this magical and timeless tribal tradition. Other activities include spending an afternoon beading with the Sarara Sabache Women’s Group, or visit the Il Konono Blacksmiths and their tradition passed from generation to generation of crafting spears, goat bells, knives and jewelry. Go on a nature walk, a mountain hike, ride bush ponies, or visit a Samburu village.
