Wildlife Viewing & Activities

Plantation Lodge lies within an easy drive of several of Tanzania’s main safari parks. Only 30 minutes from Lake Manyara National Park, the lodge provides an ideal base for exploring this scenic treasure and wildlife mecca. Alkaline lakes cover two-thirds of the park, providing habitat for vast flocks of pink flamingos, pelicans and storks. View prolific birdlife – up to 100 species in a day -- and Manyara’s many mammals on guided wildlife drives in the compact park. Giant-tusked elephants find shelter under leafy trees, while the branches harbor blue monkeys, noisy hornbills and the park’s famous tree-climbing lions. Hundred-strong baboon troops frequently cross the path. On the grassy floodplain, herds of buffalo, wildebeest, zebra and giraffe graze, while hippos crowd the Simba River. Back at the lodge, enjoy birdwatching in the flower gardens. Optional activities include a tour of a neighboring coffee plantation and a visit to a local farm.

Lake Manyara has varying concentrations and species of wildlife throughout the year, and the below chart helps to illustrate major wildlife sightings often experienced in the area. Other typical sightings may include flamingo on the lake when there is water and a number of other smaller mammals, birds and reptiles. Exact sightings will depend on weather and wildlife movements.
