Tucked beneath a grove of acacia trees that provide a constant source of food for the area's resident elephants, Old Mondoro overlooks a labyrinth of islands and waterways inhabited by hippos. The camp is located in one of the most remote corners of Lower Zambezi National Park. Just five intimate rooms of canvas and reed place the most delicate footprint in this pristine wilderness situated between a rugged escarpment and the mighty Zambezi River.

Our Expert Says
I just love the feel of this camp right on the banks of the Zambezi. Elephants make their way through camp regularly to get to the water, and so do other animals. But what really stands out here are the activities, including game drives day and night, bush walks, canoeing and boat trips. There are also photographic hides—just so much to do, and a great complement to other locations.

The Camp
Location: Lower Zambezi National Park, Zambia
Number of Tents: 5
Old Mondoro is a comfortable camp that harks back to a more traditional safari era in Zambia. Built of reed, stone and canvas with a timber deck, each of the four traditional bush chalets sits along the Zambezi River. En suite bathrooms have hot and cold running water, flush toilets, and an outdoor shower and soaking tub with spectacular views. There is also a two-bedroom family cottage, which sleeps four people. While the camp has five rooms, it takes a maximum of just eight guests at any one time, maintaining a sense of exclusivity and privacy. If a private group is traveling together for exclusive use of the camp, up to 12 guests can be accommodated. The property is not fenced, and elephants are often seen passing through the campsite. The hub of camp is the lounge and dining room, which have a 360-degree view over the river and surrounding acacia grove.

Wildlife Viewing & Activities
Lower Zambezi National Park sits in the southeastern quarter of Zambia, bordering a breathtaking escarpment to the west and the mighty Zambezi River to the east. This unique mix of habitats sets the stage for activities ranging from day and nighttime wildlife drives in open 4x4 safari vehicles to guided bush walks and the iconic experience of canoeing on the Zambezi River past pods of hippos and bathing elephants. Boat safaris on the river and catch-and-release tiger fishing are also distinctive experiences specific to this location. Old Mondoro is open only from May through October each year, as the rains can restrict access at other times. During the dry season, wildlife migrates to the river, and you may see lion, leopard, zebra, Cape buffalo, the occasional wild dog, spotted hyena, puku, eland, and of course wallowing hippos and towering elephants, especially near camp. The 400-odd bird species include kingfishers, herons, cranes and much more.
The Lower Zambezi has varying concentrations and species of wildlife, and the below chart helps to illustrate major wildlife sightings often experienced in the area. Other typical sightings may include roan antelope, puku, side-striped jackal, Nile crocodile and a number of other mammals, birds and reptiles. Exact sightings will depend on seasonality and wildlife movements.
