Wildlife Viewing & Activities
Chobe Chilwero Lodge sits at the edge of world-renowned Chobe National Park with full access to the Chobe River. Chobe National Park is home to Africa's most dense elephant population as well as healthy predator populations, including lion, leopard and hyena. Rare sable and roan antelope can be seen here, and this is the only area of Botswana where puku, a small, strawberry-blonde antelope, can be spotted. Giraffe, wild dog, lion, sable and Cape buffalo frequent the lush, riverfront habitat, while zebra, impala, wildebeest, kudu and warthog and plentiful on the savanna. Morning and afternoon wildlife drives are included in every stay and are conducted by open-sided 4x4 safari vehicles within the national park, replete with a morning stop for tea, coffee and pastries and afternoon sundowner drinks and canapés in special locations. Boat safaris and sunset cruises on the Chobe River are exceptional and unique to this area. Watch elephant and buffalo graze on the riverbanks and wade in the river as dusk cools the landscape and the day comes to a dramatic conclusion with one of Africa's famous, watercolored sunsets.
The below chart helps to illustrate major wildlife sightings often experienced in the Linyanti Reserve adjacent to the Chobe National Park. This area is well known for elephant herds, which are at their peak in the drier months of July to October, and it's a great location to track wild dogs and see lion. A variety of other mammals, birds and reptiles may be seen as well. Exact sightings will depend on weather trends and wildlife movements.
