Our Expert Says
Baker's Lodge is the best lodge in Murchison Falls, with a wonderful location right along the river, a sustainable ethos with solar power and water filtration rather than plastic bottles, and comfortable, spacious accommodations. Begin most of your boating trips right from the lodge's own small jetty, hear hippos walking through and grazing in camp each night while you're cozy in your canvas and thatch room, and enjoy stories by the campfire just in front of camp.

Baker's Lodge features 10 safari-style cottages on raised platforms sitting along the south riverbank of the Victoria Nile. Each cottage features an airy, thatched roof along with a mixture of solid white walls and a canvas and mesh river-facing front that unzips and rolls back to reveal an unobstructed view of the river and wildlife beyond. Open-plan, en suite bathrooms feature a hot shower tiled with polished stones, double sinks beneath an elongated mirror and a flushing toilet. The main lodge is set upon a raised wooden deck, covered by a thatched roof and open on all sides with 180-degree views of the river and surroundings. Wildlife Viewing & Activities
Murchison Falls National Park is one of Uganda's most rewarding wildlife destinations. From lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo—four of the famed "Big Five"—to hippo, rare sitatunga, giraffe, oribi, Ugandan kob, crocodiles in the river, Murchison delivers a rich diversity of animals uncommonly seen elsewhere. A beautiful landscape unfolds as you drift along the river or drive through the park. Game drives explore the north and south sides of the river, while boating adventures down the Victoria Nile toward Lake Albert reveal rafts of hippo cooling in the river, massive Nile crocodiles, often shyly sliding off the riverbank into the water as you pass by, and remarkable bird life. With more than 450 bird species, including the rare shoebill stork and many other water birds, Murchison Falls is a birder's paradise. Travel upstream toward the falls themselves, seeing elephant along the river and the alleged 1954 crash site of Ernest Hemingway's plane before seeing the bottom of the falls come into view. Visit the top of the falls as well, where you can feel and hear the sheer power of the water as it cascades through a narrow opening the rocks.
The below chart helps to illustrate major wildlife sightings often experienced in Murchison Falls National Park. Other typical sightings may include crocodile, sitatunga, oribi, Ugandan kob, the rare shoebill stork and a number of other mammals, birds and reptiles. Exact sightings will depend on seasonality and wildlife movements.
