Our Expert Says
I am enamored with the Welgelegen...it's in an old Victorian manor and the decor is stunning. Plus, the staff love what they do and it shows.

The Hotel
Location: Cape Town, South Africa
Number of Rooms: 13
Important Note: Though Cape Cadogan is a Distinctive property, because it is not situated on the Waterfront, it offers guests lower rates than most Traditional level properties.
A delightfully unpretentious yet sophisticated boutique hotel, Welgelegen offers warmth, style and intimacy evocative of a refined guest house. In 13 individually decorated en suite rooms no comfort is spared, from Wi-Fi and air conditioning to DVD players and hot water bottles, with personal touches like homemade biscuits, fresh fruit and Welgelgen’s own line of “green” toiletries. The high ceiling and crown molding of the spacious sitting room, the book-lined library, and touches of stained glass pay homage to the Victorian neighborhood, yet the Welgelegen has a decidedly contemporary flair, evinced in its modern furniture, tailored bedding and eclectic African art collection. Guests enjoy morning meals in the grand breakfast room, which opens onto a cobbled courtyard frequented by the resident hadedahs (large ibises). Here you’ll find a refreshing plunge pool, while steps away the spa therapy room offers manicures, pedicures, massage and flight-recovery packages. Welgelegen is truly a peaceful haven in the heart of cosmopolitan Cape Town.

Wildlife Viewing & Activities

This is one of the only places in the world to see breaching great white sharks, typically best from July to October, as well as year-round African penguins, Cape fur seals and common dolphins. Cape mountain zebra, ostrich, chacma baboon, and other mammals and birds are found in Cape Point Nature Reserve and Table Mountain National Park.
