Our Expert Says

Ulusaba Safari Lodge is a tranquil setting beneath a canopy of trees, very grounded. With the Big Five and all the comforts of home, you can't go wrong here. For a different perspective, you can combine with Ulusaba Rock Lodge, set high on the rocky hill with views down over the entire Sabi Sand.

The Camp

Location: Sabi Sand Game Reserve, South Africa
Number of Rooms: 11

Ulusaba Safari Lodge sits along a riverbed with plenty of tree shade, the rooms connected by swinging rope bridges and wooden boardwalks. The 11 graciously-appointed rooms—there are Safari, Elephant and River Rooms and a Treehouse Suite—embrace a neutral palette with rich wooden floors, grays, whites and pops of color interspersed. The feel is one of contemporary comfort and tranquility. Meals are enjoyed in the main lodge, which is very open to the outdoors with a traditional, thatched roof. Al fresco breakfast or a candlelit dinner enhance the ambience of being in the bush. A centrally located swimming pool, heated in the winter months, offers a refreshing midday dip, or the two tennis courts are great for an active afternoon. There is also a gym, wine cellar and gift shop. The unique bush observatory and high-powered telescope shows you a sky you have never seen before without the light pollution of civilization to spoil it.

Wildlife Viewing & Activities

Ulusaba Private Game Reserve forms the western edge of the Sabi Sand Game Reserve. The Sabi Sand is famous for its dense populations of wildlife, and particularly the otherwise elusive leopard, that move freely between here and Kruger National Park, South Africa's most frequented large mammal refuge. This is a Big Five wildlife area with frequent sightings of lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino, as well as a variety of plains animals and antelopes, like impala, zebra, giraffe, and many more species of mammal, reptile and bird. Activities are focused on twice daily wildlife drives in open, 4x4 safari vehicles. If weather permits, a guided bush walk will take in the smaller creatures and plants of this diverse ecosystem, and it's a nice break from being in a truck. A bush observatory features a telescope of star-gazing, and in camp you'll find a swimming pool, fitness center, spa and tennis courts for more activity.

The Sabi Sand is known for great leopard viewing, healthy rhino populations and the rest of the Big Five, making it a great wildlife destination for all levels of safari experience. The below chart helps to illustrate major wildlife sightings often experienced here. Other typical sightings may include warthogs, baboons and a number of other mammals, birds and reptiles. Exact sightings will depend on weather and wildlife movements.
