Click here to be the first to review Belmond Savute Lodge
Belmond Savute Elephant Lodge is known for the herds of elephants that traverse the plains in front of the camp. But other large animals also gather here to slake their thirst, especially since the intermittent Savute Channel began flowing once again after a hiatus of more than 30 years, though it still sees some dry periods. The lodge has its own traditional outdoor boma where guests can relax in the evening and swap safari stories while marveling at the stars overhead.
Our Expert Says
Belmond Savute Elephant Lodge combines both the tradition of canvas safari tents and the comfort of air conditioning to dissipate the midday heat. The lodge is one of the few in Botswana with climate control, wireless Internet access, room-to-room phones and other creature comforts for guests who prefer them. Situated on the banks of the Savute Channel, the lodge marries a truly awesome wildlife location and experience with excellent facilities and accoutrements.

Wildlife Viewing & Activities
Belmond Savute Elephant Lodge is situated in Chobe National Park, known for its elephant herds that are drawn here to drink during the dry winter months. When the Savute Channel is flowing, the presence of water sustains a great population of wildlife through the green summer months. Botswana's Chobe National Park is a dynamic mix of savanna dotted by rocky outcrops and marshes. The Savute Channel is one of northern Botswana's greatest mysteries, lying dormant for more than 30 years before flowing again with the uncertainty of long-term permanence—it still sees occasional dry spells. More than 250 bird species are on view in the area, while large prides of lion, wild dog, leopard, cheetah, hyena and rare species such as roan and sable antelope are also observable. The nearby Gubatsa Hills shelter leopard and klipspringer, as well as rock paintings depicting the wildlife encounters of early inhabitants. Twice- daily wildlife drives are a must, while sundowner cocktails in the bush or under baobab trees, a visit to the San rock paintings and other seasonal activities are options.
The below chart helps to illustrate major wildlife sightings often experienced in the Linyanti Reserve adjacent to the Chobe National Park. This area is well known for elephant herds, which are at their peak in the drier months of July to October, and it's a great location to track wild dogs and see lion. A variety of other mammals, birds and reptiles may be seen as well. Exact sightings will depend on weather trends and wildlife movements.
