A classic establishment dating to 1954, Paraa Safari Lodge has a vintage feel in keeping with its little-changed environs in the wild landscapes of northwest Uganda. The lodge is built on a bank overlooking the River Nile near Murchison Falls, where it plunges through a narrow gorge in a torrent of whitewater. "Paraa" means "place of hippos" in the local Luo language, and you’ll see many of them from this idyllic location.

Our Expert Says
The large but classically designed lodge sits right on the river, close to Murchison Falls National Park. With lovely gardens and wonderful views, the feeling of authenticity is maintained despite the lodge’s size and relative luxury.

The Lodge
Location: Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda
Number of Rooms: 54
In 1864, when British explorer Samuel Baker first glimpsed the thunder of Murchison Falls, his accommodations were rudimentary at best. Today, guests relish the comforts purveyed by Paraa Safari Lodge, overlooking the River Nile as it flows from its source at Lake Victoria into Lake Albert. The lodge within Murchison Falls National Park offers a refined way to experience the wildlife and wilderness of the region. Each room has an en suite bathroom and balcony overlooking the Nile. The safari décor evokes the mood of a bygone era, amid modern amenities and renovated facilities. The large free-form swimming pool overlooks the Nile, which was the setting for the classic Hollywood movie The African Queen. After a long day in the bush, relax with a drink at the poolside bar or settle into one of the sofas in the Explorers’ Bar. Meals featuring international cuisine are served in the dining room or on the balcony overlooking the river.

Wildlife Viewing & Activities
One of Africa’s best-kept secrets is a point on the River Nile where it is suddenly channeled into a jungle-fringed gorge just 20 feet wide, then cascades 142 feet down through a rocky sluice box on its journey toward Lake Albert. The force of the water is tremendous, and any stay at Paraa Safari Lodge must include a boat trip to the foot of Murchison Falls. A drive to the brink offers another perspective, a glimpse through the mist to the crowning rainbow and narrow mouth of the falls. More adventurous travelers can trek to the rim. The river attracts a host of wildlife including prolific crocodiles, hippos and 450 bird species. Safari drives, nature walks, chimpanzee treks, delta boat excursions and fishing trips within Murchison Falls National Park immerse you in the diversity of wildlife here—look for lion, warthog, buffalo, rare sitatunga antelope, giant forest hog, Uganda kob, topi, waterbuck, elephant and leopard.
The below chart helps to illustrate major wildlife sightings often experienced in Murchison Falls National Park. Other typical sightings may include crocodile, sitatunga, oribi, Ugandan kob, the rare shoebill stork and a number of other mammals, birds and reptiles.
