Set beneath the shade of mopane and tamboti trees in its own private reserve, Ngala Safari Lodge showcases a bygone style that is set against the undeniable wilderness of the Greater Kruger Park. The 21 thatched cottages have all the modern comforts of home while granting access to Africa's best densities of animals just outside. As if a modern mythology tale, view big cats, giant elephant and rhino traipse through your viewfinder.
Our Expert Says
Ngala Safari Lodge is a nice low-cost option for both families and single travelers. It is a larger lodge, and while it doesn't have the intimacy of a smaller camp, it still has the luxury of being in a private reserve. For travelers seeking a smaller camp, and particularly couples, nearby Ngala Tented Camp is a great option with only nine tents and a greater level of luxury.

The Camp
Location: Ngala Private Reserve, Greater Kruger Park, South Africa
Number of Rooms: 21
Ngala, meaning "lion" in Shangaan, is a private reserve with a direct, unfenced border with Kruger National Park. Ngala Safari Lodge is nested within a thicket of mopane and tamboti trees. The 20 thatched cottages and one family suite each feature comforts, such as air conditioning and room fans, along with en suite bathrooms that have bathtubs and showers. A central swimming pool offers respite from the heat of the day, and meals can be enjoyed in the open-air courtyard or the traditional boma. There is a children's program for young ones with three cottages allowing a child under 16 to share with parents, and the one family suite features a private plunge pool, personal mini-bar, indoor and outdoor showers and plenty of space to allow for your own personal family safari. The lodge also waives the single supplement for the first two singles in a booking, so it's an ideal spot for solo travelers as well.

You may see lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, white rhino, buffalo, elephant, giraffe, zebra, spotted hyena and more within the reserve. Both morning and afternoon wildlife drives are offered, along with those that last into the evening to search for elusive, nocturnal creatures. Seasonally walking safaris and bush walks are on offer as well.
