Wildlife Viewing & Activities

This section of Chief’s Island hosts an overwhelming concentration of plains wildlife and large predators, particularly lions, and offers guests some of the best wildlife viewing opportunities in Botswana. On a daily basis, large concentrations of wildlife frequent the front of the camp, allowing guests to experience exciting views without even leaving the veranda. In fact, it’s not unusual to find wildlife wandering directly through camp at nearly any time of day. Activities include morning and afternoon wildlife drives. Open 4x4s provide an exquisite vantage for viewing the high concentrations of plains wildlife and all the predator, including the big cats. Lion sightings are frequent. Guests at Little Mombo Camp can also expect to see leopard and cheetah, wild dog, spotted hyena, large herds of buffalo, elephant, southern giraffe, blue wildebeest and Burchell's zebra. Birdlife is also prolific around Little Mombo Camp. Waterfowl includes African jacana, pygmy-geese, the massive goliath heron and migrant waders.

The Okavango Delta is a year-round wildlife viewing destination, with the peak mammal viewing in the dry winter between June and October and fantastic birding all year. The below chart shows major wildlife sightings. Other typical sightings may include small mammals, such as jackals, foxes, caracal and serval, and a wide variety of birds and reptiles. Exact sightings will depend on weather and wildlife movements and can vary from camp to camp, since many camps are located on islands.

Conservation

Little Mombo Camp is integrally involved in the Botswana Rhino Reintroduction Project. In 2001, the camp’s owners, together with Botswana's Department of Wildlife, initiated a program that has resulted in white rhinos running free and wild in the Okavango Delta once more. The first group of four white rhino arrived at Mombo in November 2001, with this group also financing the construction of bomas, and much of the transport and the monitoring costs. An additional 22 rhinos arrived as a result of an innovative 'rhino-for-roan' swap between South Africa and Botswana. The ultimate accolade, though, has come from the rhinos themselves. In August 2004, the first white rhino calf was born in the wild in Mombo, 16 months after its mother was released in 2001. Since then, the steady birth rate more than indicates the success of the program.
