Dominating the heights of Windhoek, the historic Hotel Heinitzburg combines supreme comfort with vintage charm. When Namibia was part of German South-West Africa, Count von Schwerin originally commissioned Castle Heinitzburg for his fiance, Margarethe von Heinitz. Now a Relais & Chateaux property, the esteemed luxury hotel group calls the Heinitzburg “the brightest jewel in the land of gems.”

The Hotel
Location: Windhoek, Namibia
Number of Rooms: 16
The owners of the family-run Hotel Heinitzburg endeavor to combine traditional African friendliness with outstanding European culinary art and a world-class wine cellar. The original castle is now the hotel, with whitewashed walls and opulent interiors, authentic historic artwork, luxurious fabrics and handcrafted furniture to envelop guests in a supremely romantic atmosphere. Each of the 16 individually decorated rooms is unique, with tufted armchairs, gilded mirrors and chandeliers, en suite bathroom, flat-screen TV and air conditioning. Relax in the castle courtyard, or poolside on a lounge chair. The gourmet restaurant, which overlooks the Windhoek skyline, invites a celebration of the senses. The pride of the castle, the wine cellar, is built into the mountain rock and bears the largest collection of carefully selected South African vintages in Namibia. Complete the fairytale by sampling a glass of South Africa’s best on the patio while admiring a golden sunset.
