Johannesburg
Day 1
Cosmopolitan Johannesburg is the jumping-off point for most South African safaris. The city of four million is a vibrant mélange of colors and cultures. Food and music are central to life in ‘Joburg,’ and its clubs and pubs are an integral part of the social fabric. Tour Soweto or visit the Apartheid Museum to gain a deeper understanding of Johannesburg’s history, travails and rich multicultural heritage.
Fairlawns Hotel & Spa
Fairlawns is an exclusive sanctuary within the commercial center of Johannesburg. An oasis of tranquility yet conveniently situated in the Sandton suburb not far from O.R. Tambo International Airport, Fairlawns is an award-winning 5-star boutique hotel featuring an enticing selection of unique luxury suites that evoke period European ambience. Rambling lawns, lush gardens and the inviting pool create an inviting haven for relaxing before or after a safari.
Kruger National Park
Days 2–4
World-renowned Kruger National Park in South Africa is a flagship destination for safari-goers, thanks to its dense wildlife populations. Checking off the big cats, major mammals and a host of bird species is a given in this diverse ecosystem. A number of private game reserves dot the greater park area providing exclusive access to the treasures here and allowing a variety of modes to experience them, from wildlife drives in open vehicles to intimate safari walks.
Tanda Tula Safari Camp
Tanda Tula Safari Camp sits in the heart of the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve bordering the famed Kruger National Park. One of the few East African style tented camps found in South Africa, Tanda Tula features 12 secluded, en suite, canvas tents, each with a private deck overlooking the Nhlaralumi riverbed and shaded by majestic trees. The romance of this classic safari camp is enhanced by low impact daytime and evening wildlife viewing, interpreted nature walks, and sundowners out in the bushveld.
Victoria Falls (Zambia side)
Days 5 & 6
You'll see the spray first, visible for miles, called Mosi-oa-Tunya – the “smoke that thunders” – by the local people. The roar of the cataract follows, as the Zambezi River plunges 350 feet over a basalt cliff into the gorge below. View Victoria Falls on rainforest trails, from the famous bridge, or via an exhilarating helicopter or ultralight flight – activities abound in Livingstone, including whitewater rafting, canoeing and sunset cruises.
Toka Leya
Toka Leya Camp is hidden on the banks of the Zambezi River in the western sector of Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, upstream from Victoria Falls. Surrounded by shady canopy trees and an ancient baobab, the camp enjoys a serene setting in view of the river and its islands. Wildlife is frequently in view, including noisy hippos, elephants and a wide array of birds.
Okavango Delta
Days 7–9
Where the Okavango River meets the Kalahari Desert, a green oasis sprawls amid the sands and parched savanna. The maze of channels sustains a profusion of wildlife in permanently flooded lagoons and on land. Explore the marsh by poled mokoro, a traditional dugout canoe, and wildlife drives on higher ground. Islands and wetlands are home to prolific birdlife, hippo and red lechwe, while elephant, lion, leopard, zebra and more thrive beyond the water’s reach.
Jao Camp
Using a dugout canoe to get onto the remote island where Jao Camp is located sets the stage for the adventurous safari experiences to come. The varied habitats of the private concession surrounding Jao Camp—from lush waterways and lagoons to dry Kalahari grasslands and open floodplains—offer both land- and water-based explorations, depending on water levels. This Okavanga Delta setting is your base for a most unforgettable bush adventure!
Okavango Delta
Days 10–12
Within the remote Okavango Delta, continue seeking predator and prey interaction, migratory and resident bird species, a plethora of antelopes and plains animals, and smaller creatures of the night like porcupine, aardvark and pangolin. In the evenings enjoy some of the prettiest sunsets on the planet, and as twilight takes hold, view stars like the ancestors, without a bit of light pollution to hinder their brightness.
Little Mombo Camp
Linked to Mombo Camp by a raised walkway, Little Mombo’s intimate size enables a luxuriously private feeling, ideal for small groups and guests looking for a secluded African safari experience. Little Mombo Camp is tucked along the northern tip of Chief’s Island, in the private Moremi Game Reserve, within the famed Okavango Delta. Overlooking the floodplain beneath broad, shady trees, the camp and its surroundings pulse with wildlife.
