Established in 1925 to protect the mountain gorilla, Volcanoes is Africa’s oldest national park. About 604 gorillas – just over half the world’s remaining total – live in the rainforests of the Virunga Mountains, an extinct chain of volcanoes straddling the borders of Rwanda, Uganda and Congo. But they’re not the only primates at home here—large troops of golden monkeys are also a highlight. Spend two days tracking gorillas and one day with the monkeys on this primate survey of the park.

Our Expert Says

For anyone who wants to really experience the mountain gorillas, this is a superb itinerary. Three days of trekking allows you to spend time with multiple groups of gorillas. Seeing multiple families and how the dynamics differ between them is fascinating; it reminds me of just how similar to humans they are.

Day 1: Kigali

Located in the geographical heart of Rwanda, compact, low-rise Kigali is the country’s rapidly growing capital and center of commerce. The attractive city sprawls across verdant mountains and enjoys a pleasant high-altitude climate. Kigali is home to fine contemporary hotels and restaurants whose international menus incorporate local flavors and historic Belgian influence. Kigali's lively and colorful crafts market is considered one of the best in Africa.
