Ubuntu Camp is a traditional mobile base camp that follows the famous wildebeest migration from the southern plains of Serengeti National Park, where the herds calve annually and north to the Mara River, where the wildebeest and zebra herds cross crocodile-filled waters. Ten well-appointed canvas tents exude an ambience of yesteryear while maintaining key comforts amid the expansive natural setting of the Serengeti plains.

Wildlife Viewing & Activities

Wildlife viewing is optimal year-round, as Ubuntu moves with the Great Migration. From mid-November to mid-March, the camp sits within the Kusini region of the southern Serengeti National Park, where wildebeest herds gather annually to give birth on the short grass plains. Activities here include morning and afternoon wildlife drives, off-road driving and cultural interactions and walks, all of which showcase an array of wildlife from wildebeest, zebra and gazelle to predators, birds and a variety of plains mammals. In mid-March, the camp closes and relocates to the northern Serengeti, where wildebeest and zebra herds follow each other across dangerous, crocodile-filled waters in search of fresh grasses. The camp is open in this area from mid-June through October. Activities revolve solely around morning and afternoon wildlife drives, and hot air ballooning is available at an extra cost during this time.

During the famous Great Migration, the wildebeest can be found dropping their young in the southern Serengeti between December and March, and are typically found attempting to cross the Mara River in the northern Serengeti between July and October. The resident wildlife in the park is found year-round. Other typical sightings may include jackal, warthogs and a number of other mammals, birds and reptiles. Exact sightings will depend on rain patterns and wildlife movements.

Conservation

Ubuntu Camp uses best practices for maintaining a light carbon footprint and supporting local communities, wildlife and wilderness areas. The camp runs fully on solar power, and any carbon emissions, from vehicles, for example, are offset through a local community reforestation program. When the camp is broken down and relocated three times a year, no trace is left behind. The camp actively donates funds to support the Osinoni School via the Kamitei Foundation. In the past funds have been used to purchase school books and a football kit. Ubuntu also actively supports the Serengeti Wild Dog Conservation Project conducted by the Frankfurt Zoological Society. The project, among other efforts, monitors the population of wild dogs in the Serengeti ecosystem and promote coexistence between the wild dogs and local communities with domestic animals.
