Wildlife Viewing & Activities
Singita Pamushana Lodge is situated within the private 130,000-acre Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve, which features 38 different habitats and ecological zones in utter solitude. Bordering Gonarezhou National Park, the reserve supports one of the highest concentrations of black rhino in Africa and 14 species of eagle. Cheetah, hyena, African wild dog, hippo and the Big Five roam freely here. Unique plains animals such as Lichtenstein's hartebeest, nyala and sable are among the 17 unique species of antelope that live within the reserve, along with more than 400 bird species. Activities include morning and afternoon wildlife drives with expert local guides, guided safari walks (ages 16 and older), fishing on the lake, sunset cruises, stargazing and enriching visits to the Shangaan community and San Bushmen rock art sites dating back more than 2,000 years.
Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve is a year-round wildlife viewing destination, with the peak mammal viewing in the dry winter between April and October and fantastic birding all year with excellent migratory species in the green summer season as well. The below chart shows major wildlife sightings. The reserve is home to 17 unique species of antelope and over 400 bird species. Conservation
Established in 1994, thanks to the largest single donor investment ever made in Zimbabwe, the Malilangwe Trust set out to purchase, protect and manage a wilderness area bordering Gonarezhou National Park. Their work led to the creation of the Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve. Singita Pamushana's chief role is to preserve the wildlife and ecology of this reserve. All proceeds from the lodge go back into the many conservation and community projects of the Malilangwe Trust, including feeding 19,500 children every school day, establishing food irrigation schemes that support nearly 1,000 people, and restoring historic biodiversity to the area through reintroduction and monitoring of endemic species such as black and white rhino. Ongoing work performed by the Malilangwe Trust includes annual aerial wildlife surveys, fire management and security. The reserve boasts a fully functioning recycling program and the lodge composts organic waste.
