Wildlife Viewing & Activities
Belmond Eagle Island Lodge offers a water-focused safari in the heart of the Okavango Delta, the world's largest inland delta and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Activities center around mokoro (dugout canoe) excursions in shallow waters with a guide standing in the back pushing the canoe with a long pole. Guests also enjoy motorboat safaris in deeper and broader waterways where you might spot hippo pods coming up for air or crocodiles sunbathing on islands. Guided walking safaris offer a chance to search for and identify evidence of resident wildlife. Other activities include bush picnics, sundowner cocktails and stargazing. Fishing trips and scenic helicopter flights can also be arranged at an additional cost. Elephant, hippo, numerous birds, reptiles and other elusive mammals abound in this massive oasis in the heart of the Kalahari Desert. A helicopter based at the lodge offers a 35-minute scenic flight over the winding waterways dotted with grass islands, a unique experience offering a different perspective and incredible photography opportunities.
The Okavango Delta is a year-round wildlife viewing destination, with the peak mammal viewing in the dry winter between June and October and fantastic birding all year. The below chart shows major wildlife sightings. Other typical sightings may include small mammals, such as jackals, foxes, caracal and serval, and a wide variety of birds and reptiles. Exact sightings will depend on weather and wildlife movements and can vary from camp to camp, since many camps are located on islands.
